How to read your amount

Start with the basic rate for your rating and dependent status. VA's table has twelve rows from 30% up: the veteran alone, with a spouse, with one or two dependent parents, and with one child, in every mix. The basic rate already covers one child. Each further child under 18 adds the amount in the fifth column, each child aged 18 to 23 in a qualifying school program adds the sixth, and a spouse who receives Aid and Attendance adds the last. In VA's worked example, a 70% rating with a spouse who receives Aid and Attendance and 3 dependent children under 18 gets $2,367.45 a month.

Under 38 U.S.C. 1115, the school-age amount is paid on account of that child, so a child over 18 in school is counted in the school column rather than in a "with child" row. The added amounts below 100% are the 100% amount scaled to the rating and rounded down to the dollar, which is why they are whole dollars. The dependents guide works through several families.

Rating Ledger is not part of VA and does not file or decide claims. Amounts are VA's published monthly rates effective December 1, 2025 for a veteran, before any deduction or special monthly compensation; ratings follow 38 CFR 4.25 and 38 CFR 4.26. Last checked 2026-10-20. Only a VA rating decision sets a rating or a payment. See the methodology.
