Next step and previous step

100% is the top of the schedular table; amounts above it come from special monthly compensation, which this site does not calculate. Dropping to 90% would pay $2,362.30, $1,576.28 less. A 100% rating can come from a single disability rated 100%, from combined ratings that reach 95 or more in Table I, or from a total rating based on unemployability under 38 CFR 4.16(a).

Ways to reach 100%

6 of the 45 two-rating pairs from 10% to 90% combine to 100%: 90% and 90% (99), 90% and 80% (98), 90% and 70% (97), 90% and 60% (96), 90% and 50% (95), 80% and 80% (96).

A single condition can also be rated 100%: on this site, Meniere's disease (DC 6205), PTSD (DC 9411), Shoulder replacement (DC 5051), Hip replacement (DC 5054), Knee replacement (DC 5055), Back strain (lumbosacral or cervical strain) (DC 5237), Epilepsy (seizures) (DC 8910), Sleep apnea (DC 6847) and 5 more have a 100% level. For Meniere's disease, PTSD, Shoulder replacement, Hip replacement, Knee replacement, 100% is the highest level the schedule offers.

38 CFR 4.104, diagnostic code 7120, Varicose veins, at 100%: “Massive board-like edema with constant pain at rest.”

38 CFR 4.114, diagnostic code 7338, Hernia (inguinal, ventral, umbilical), at 100%: “Irreparable hernia present for 12 months or more, 15 cm or more in at least one dimension, with pain during at least three of: bending over, activities of daily living, walking, climbing stairs.”

38 CFR 4.119, diagnostic code 7913, Diabetes mellitus (type 2), at 100%: “Requiring more than one daily injection of insulin, restricted diet, and regulation of activities (avoidance of strenuous occupational and recreational activities), with episodes of ketoacidosis or hypoglycemic reactions requiring at least three hospitalizations per year or weekly visits to a diabetic care provider, plus either progressive loss of weight and strength or complications that would be compensable if separately evaluated.”

One disability rated 100% meets the single-disability threshold of 60% in 38 CFR 4.16(a) for a total rating based on unemployability; a combined 100% from several disabilities meets it when one of them is at least 40%. The TDIU guide explains the rest of the test.
