Notes in the schedule
- The schedule directs that this code be used for illnesses associated with 38 CFR 3.317(a)(2)(i)(B)(3), functional gastrointestinal disorders presumed for Gulf War veterans, other than those that can be evaluated under DC 7319 (irritable bowel syndrome).
- 38 CFR 3.317 describes functional gastrointestinal disorders as chronic or recurrent symptoms not explained by any structural, endoscopic, laboratory or other objective sign of injury or disease, and excludes structural gastrointestinal diseases. Its examples include irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, functional vomiting and functional constipation.
- For the Gulf War presumption, 38 CFR 3.317(a)(1)(i) requires the disability to have become manifest during active service in the Southwest Asia theater of operations, or to a degree of 10 percent or more not later than December 31, 2026 (the date in the regulation as checked on 2026-10-26).
- The note to DC 7319 says that code may include functional digestive disorders such as dyspepsia, functional bloating, constipation and diarrhea, and that other symptoms are rated under the appropriate code, including DC 7356.
- Under the opening paragraph of 38 CFR 4.114, ratings under DC 7356 are not combined with ratings under diagnostic codes 7301 to 7329 and the other codes it lists: VA assigns a single evaluation under the code that reflects the predominant disability picture, elevated to the next higher level when the severity of the overall disability warrants.

How this rating fits a claim
The top level, 80%, is at or above the 60% that 38 CFR 4.16(a) sets for a single disability to qualify for consideration of a total rating based on unemployability. A rating under DC 7356 is combined with every other rating by Table I, never added; the calculator shows the result with your other ratings and dependents.
The rating is set from the evidence at the time of the decision, usually including a VA examination. If the condition has worsened since, VA accepts a claim for an increase on VA Form 21-526EZ; see how to request an increase.
